Frequently Asked Questions
Q. "I recently had knee surgery, and can't stand to shower. Will these seats work for me?"
A. Shower seats are often recommended for those who have surgeries on the knees, severe arthritis, dizzy spells, have handicaps related to the legs or feet, or anything else that makes it uncomfortable or unadvisable to stand in a shower for long periods of time. With the variety of styles available, you are sure to find a shower seat that will suit your needs, preferences and doctor's recommendations if applicable. Don't see what you need here? Q. "What is the difference between a shower seat and a transfer bench?"
A. A shower seat, sometimes called shower chairs or shower stools, can be portable (like the ones offered on this page), wall mounted and folding, wall mounted in a fixed position, or built in. They simply provide a place to sit once you are in the shower. This is helpful for those with difficulty standing for long enough to shower but can get into the shower fairly well, as well as for those who just want to make shaving one's legs or scrubbing one's feet less of a balancing act. Portable shower seats are also often used by those who have friends or family who need assistance during their visit, but do not need a permanent seat installed in the bath. Transfer benches, on the other hand, are designed for those who have difficulty getting into a tub and also need a seat while showering. Transfer benches straddle the tub wall so that the bather may sit on the section of the bench outside of the tub and slide over into the tub. This is often an essential device for amputees, those with poor balance, or anyone who dislikes or cannot raise their legs high enough to step over the tub wall. Both shower seats and transfer benches are available in a variety of styles, including with or without backs.
