IPS & OD Pipe Sizing Explained
"IPS" stands for "Iron Pipe Size". Galvanized, black, stainless steel, brass, PVC and ABS schedule 40 are iron pipe sized piping. IPS pipe sizes are denoted by the inside diameter of the pipes, which are not precise measurements. The outside diameter of the pipe itself must be measured for correct size identification, as listed on the chart below. Once the pipe size is determined, choosing the correct escutcheon is easy since IPS escutcheons are designated by the IPS pipe size they will fit. Read further detailed information about IPS pipe sizing.
"OD" stands for "Outer Diameter" and is a measurement of the diameter of the pipe as taken from the outside edge to outside edge of the pipe looking straight at the body (not the threads) of the pipe. Copper piping is easier to determine by the outside diameter than IPS piping.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q. "What is the purpose of a pipe escutcheon?"
A. Think of pipe escutcheons as multipurpose trim for your plumbing setup. They're like protective and decorative sleeves for where your pipes poke through walls or floors, covering up any gaps or rough edges while also making your plumbing look neat and polished. Plus, they shield against water and debris sneaking past where it shouldn't, helping to prevent damage. Basically, they enhance the appearance of plumbing installations while offering protection against potential damage.
Q. "How are escutcheons kept in place?"
A. The pipe itself keeps the escutcheon centered; you can seal the underside of the rim with caulk or adhesive, which will block seepage and keep secure the escutcheon to the wall or floor.
Q. "What are snap/split escutcheons used for?"
A. Snap/split escutcheons are perfect for quick and easy installation around existing pipes without the need for disassembly. They are designed to separate at one end and have a hinge on the other side, which allows them to be spread apart on one side and then be closed in place around the pipe without having to slide them over an open end of the pipe. This makes them particularly useful for retrofitting or repairing plumbing installations where pipes are already in place.
Q. "What is a Smitty plate used for?"
A. A Smitty plate (also known as a remodeler's plate or a repair or retrofit plate) is used to cover larger holes in the wall where a faucet valve may have been replaced and it is not cost effective to replace the whole wall. They are also used when a larger hole was needed to repair a valve or leak, and a regular escutcheon is not sufficient to cover it.
Q. "What does "PVD" polished brass mean?"
A. "PVD" stands for "Physical Vapor Deposition" which is a modern plating process used in faucet manufacturing. Vaporized zirconium reacts with nitrogen and other gases to form a VERY durable plated surface. Unlike polished brass finishes in the past that would easily tarnish over time, polished brass finishes with PVD are extremely durable and won't generally tarnish or discolor.
