About Thread Sealants for NPT Threads

National Pipe Threads (NPT) as specified by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) have tapered threads. These are the most common threads used for residential plumbing and general purposes. NPT threads are used for sealing and joining pipe to fittings in low pressure liquid, air, and mechanical applications. Tapered threads are deeper at the end of the pipe and become increasingly shallower the further they are from the end of the pipe. The tapered thread pitch is 3/4" over one foot of length which is the same as 1/16 of an inch in an inch. The taper on the pipe allows the pipe to screw inside the fitting only until it is forced to stop because of the taper. The distance the pipe can actually be threaded into the fitting is specified by the ANSI standard. After tightening a pipe into a fitting with a wrench the threads may have slight air spaces between the pipe and fitting which could cause a leak and therefore a pipe sealant must be used to ensure all gaps are filled to prevent leakage.

Dry-seal threads (NPTF) also are tapered threads. NPTF threads are used in applications where pipe sealing compounds could fail due to higher heat or pressure applications than normal NPT threads can withstand. NPTF dry-seal threads are designed to seal mechanically by slightly, but sufficiently, crushing the threads into a fitting when tightened with a wrench. This allows the joining of the pipe and fitting without a sealant.

NPT and NPTF threads are interchangeable with proper pipe joint compound sealants or PTFE tape. None of the other thread standards are interchangeable. Female NPT threads are sometimes designated as "FPT" or "Fips" and male NPT threads as "MPT" or "Mips".

Q. "Can I get longer brass pipe nipples than what you list above?"
A. We are currently showing all of the brass nipple lengths available. As longer lengths become available we will add them to our pages, however, due to shipping costs 48" lengths are the longest we will ship.

Q. "These brass pipe nipples you show state they are NPT threads. How can I determine my existing threads are NPT? What are the threads per inch (TPI) for these pipe threads?"
A. We have a page dedicated to help you answer these questions about determining the correct pipe size, and the threads per inch for each pipe size up to 12" on our finding the correct pipe thread size page.

Q. "What is PTFE tape, and why do you not offer Teflon® tape?"
A. PTFE is the abbreviation for the chemical composition poly-tetra-fluoro-ethylene. PTFE is a heat resistant, non-sticking, chemical and corrosion resistant film cut into these widths and lengths for the purpose of sealing pipe threads. The natural color of PTFE is white but it can be pigmented to put color into it. Many companies make PTFE tape. Teflon® is a brand name for PTFE that is owned by the DuPont™ company. We just don't happen to offer their brand name.

Q. "I'm hearing a lot about lead-free these days. What does that have to do with plumbing products and how does the new lead-free legislation affect me?"
A. Basically, the laws implemented Jan. 1st, 2014 require plumbing products that come in contact with drinking water to be "essentially lead free" (less than 0.25% weighted average). A quick note about copper and lead...

If your home has copper water piping and those pipes were installed before 1986, your copper pipe/fittings were generally joined or soldered together with "50/50" solder. 50/50 solder was comprised of 50% lead and 50% tin and had been used by the majority of plumbers to join copper pipe and fittings for many decades. For homes that have 50/50 solder in their water piping we recommend that you install and use a lead removal filter for your drinking water. Lead has been determined to have significant negative impacts on health, especially for children, and there is no safe level determined for human consumption.
